The Rainbow Chorus has had a busy year so far including wedding performances, singing at the Old Steine in the rain for IDAHOBIT and preparing an adventurous programme for our summer concert.
We’ve been lucky enough to work with the very talented Jacob Swindells as guest musical director and, on the 30th June at St Georges church in Kemptown, we’ll be performing the beautiful Stabat Mater. Written by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in 1736, the piece tells the Easter story through twelve haunting movements and has given the choir a chance to work on a challenging but stunning work. Jacob has enabled us to really stretch ourselves and has given us the opportunity to demonstrate our flexibility as an SATB choir. We’ve also got some beautiful solo performances.
If that wasn’t enough, we’ve appointed a talented new musical director this year – Aneesa Chaudhry. Aneesa has brought her very own style of direction to the choir. This means that, in addition to Stabat Mater, our audience will be able to enjoy a heady mix of Jazz, Pop and Gospel during the second half of the concert. Aneesa is amazing to work with and has been quite inspirational in the pieces she’s chosen for this performance, exposing us to types of music outside of our usual repertoire.
We’ve also been involved in an exciting project – ‘Global Queer Quire’, which involves LGBT choirs across the world creating a virtual choir video with thousands of voices joined in harmony. This involved us learning Lady GaGa’s ‘Born this way’ in just over a week. We’re submitting a video and audio production of this performance (eventually available on YouTube), where we were whipped into shape (quite literally) by our MD! We had such fun making the recording and showing off our outrageous costumes!
We hope that parts of our performance will be selected for the premiere at the 2012 GALA Festival in Denver, Colorado as well as the BT River of Music Olympic Cultural Festival 2012 at Trafalgar Square. We hope to finish our Pimms and Pergolesi 30th June concert with a bang by performing this piece.
So, at 7pm on 30th June at St Georges Church Kemptown, we welcome you to join us for a lovely evening of music and fun…with a jug of Pimms thrown in!
