‘My Transsexual Summer’ new Channel 4 TV series
The above titled new series begins on Tuesday 8th November at 10pm on Channel 4. It follows seven trans people placed in a retreat over the summer, following them on their journey to become who they really are.
Episode 1 introduces our new friends:
Sarah, 28, has just begun to live full-time as a woman. She is building up the courage to tell her parents about her new identity and is trying to build a new life for herself.
Lewis, 22, is raising money for a double mastectomy and investigating the possibility of a phalloplasty (penis construction).
Max, 25, has already undergone ‘top surgery’ (a double mastectomy and male chest sculpting). He hopes to become Britain’s first transgender Rabbi.
Former policeman Karen, 52, is in the midst of preparing for full gender re-assignment surgery.
Living at home, Drew aged 22 is desperate to lead a ‘normal’ life and comes to the retreat in order to gain the confidence to do so.
Fox, 30, has been transitioning for six months, and struggles daily to overcome his feminine looks. He works in Brighton and has the support of his friends and family.
Satisfied being a trans woman, 25 year old Donna is happy and confident in herself but finds relationships tough.
The programme explores what it is to question your gender identity in 2011 and gives an insight into the difficulties of living in a society which often marginalises and discriminates against minority groups. It’s set to be a very interesting and thought provoking series and is most certainly one to watch.
If you miss it on Tuesday, fear not, it will be available to watch on 4od.
