The L Project
Georgey Payne, singer/songwriter for lesbian band Greymatter and Caron Morton, co-founder of GELtoday.com, have announced plans to record a charity song ‘Breathing Life,’ at Dean Street Studios in Soho this October. The single, which will be available to download before Christmas 2011; will see all its proceeds stay within the gay community via Stonewall and Diversity Role Models.
“Support for The L Project has been amazing, help has been pouring in from everywhere, from artists to sponsors, people just want the chance to be able to make a difference to those who really need it in the gay community” comments Caron. “It’s the first time that gay people have ever got together to all record a song purely for gay charities, shoot a video and then hope it raises lots of money so help goes where it’s really needed” Georgey adds.
Participating artists include Scottish legend, Horse, Georgey & Emma (Greymatter), Christina Novelli, Sandra MacBeth, Amber (HeadsHearts), Mel Sanson (Kenelis), Nina McCann, Sofia Antonia Milone (Geekgirl), O’Hooley & Tidow, Lorna Thomas, Leanna Goring, Juey, Jess Gardham, Amy Sutton (Neon Choir), Tara Wescott-Simms and many, many more.
Organisations & Supporters promoting the project include Zhoosh, GoGo Festival, GayGirlNet, FOCX Clothing, The Candy Bar, Queervillage, The L-Fest, ‘Out in South London’ radio show, Brighton’s Radio Reverb, Natalie State & Sandra Davenport (Candy Bar Girls) with many more offering their support each day.
The L Project was created to raise as much money as possible for the gay community; with specific focus on combating homophobic bullying of young people at school.
In June, Caron suggested to Georgey to write a charity song. The same evening, inspired by a dear friend of hers who is being bullied and beaten up by kids at his school for being gay, Georgey wrote the song ‘Breathing Life.’ With a catchy melody and engaging lyrics clearly aimed at the gay population, the song depicts the up’s and down’s that often come with being gay. This is offset with a happy twist to remind the listener that despite life’s harships, things do get better. Caron was knocked out by the song and the rest as they say, is history.
“We are hoping that everyone gets on board with this and spreads the word everywhere” states Caron, “we have been very lucky in that VroomVroomVroom are very kindly covering the cost of the recording studio and although the initial costs are not huge, thanks to the Dean Street Studio and everybody is giving up their time and skills free, to get all the artists in one place from all over the UK, over one weekend to record the song and make the accompanying video, has some obvious financial outlay. We still need sponsorship to cover the transportation and accommodation costs.”
