National Bisexual Visibility Day September 23rd
September 23rd marks a date that is more than just worthy a mention, because too often it is the letter in LGBT that, as Camel from Brighton BothWays points out, “is often the thing that happens in these communities that gets ignored”. September 23rd is National Bisexual Visibility Day with events held around the country and here in Brighton by bisexual group ‘Brighton BothWays’.
Mel Berry, Zhoosh blogger explains in her blog how bisexuality is both a privilege and a curse (full post here).
“I honestly think bi’s get the worst deal. For example my ex-boss last week said to me jokingly: “You are just greedy you bisexuals” to which I replied: “No I’m just not fussy.” Erm, well done Mel, great retort, you showed him! But what do you say without sounding like you are having a rant?
A lot of people see being bisexual as a cop out for not wanting to admit to fully fledged gayness or see it as a sneaky way to be part of many different peer groups. I don’t. I have had sex with both men and women, and I love both equally. I have also fallen head over heals for partners of both sexes. It’s not a choice for me, it’s life.
I see it both a privilege and a curse. I have the option to have sex with many different interesting people and therefore enjoy an array of sexual experiences. Conversely, life can be confusing, there are potentially more temptations and you sometimes feel like a traitor amongst peers”.
This year Brighton BothWays hopes to build on the success of last years’ event and have another Purple PubMeet. (Purple being the colour to represent bisexuality)
Ludy from Brighton BothWays explains what’s planned,
“Last year we had 26 people over the course of the evening which puts our event in the same league as the ones in London and Manchester – we’re hoping to make it bigger, better and more purple this year! Last years event featured a bisexually themed pub quiz and home-made cakes with edible purple glitter – we haven’t yet finalised the full details of this years activities so stay tuned”.
The Purple Pub Meet will be on 22nd September (so the day before the actual Bi Visibility Day) in Church Street Bar 112 Church Street, Brighton from 7-10pm.
