So, you don’t DO Pride?
Don’t want to go to the Park? Don’t think you should pay to do so? So, like, totally over the whole Pride thing?
Well what are you going to do this weekend then?
Fear not – there are some alternatives for you …
Arjee Bhajee @ The Arches
Formerly the Calabash Tent at the main Pride event
Since 2003, Calabash have celebrated cultural and ethnic diversity in the LGBTQ community, and have grown year on year as the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) community has gone from strength to strength.
In previous years, Calabash has presented the Calabash Tent in the main Pride event in the park. This year, things are somewhat different, with a social at the Volks Bar & Club at the Arches from 12 – 2 pm on Saturday.
This free event will celebrate “all races, genders and sexualities” and at the same time, raise funds for the “Rainbow Fund“, a charitable fund for the benefit of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender community in Brighton & Hove, and to help maintain the Brighton & Hove AIDS Memorial.
I spoke with Pushy C who told me, on behalf of Calabash, that it’s “really important to remember that Calabash are raising money for the Rainbow Fund, a wonderful local charity”.
“Calabash are bringing people together; it’s inclusive and mixed, and everyone can have a good, relaxed time, with ethnic foods available and a great selection of DJs. We’re really looking forward to a lively, and beautiful get together.”
So, if you’d like to do something different and do something good at the same time, why not check out Arjee Bhajee? (And dont forget, for those of you so inclined, after the social there will be a party from 2 – 9 pm at the same location, with a wide selection of DJs.)

So if you fancy “food, cakes, drinks, music, talks and ways to get radicalised and active in your local Queer community”, why not pop along?
