Eurovision …

… no, don’t navigate away! Seriously ….

The thing is on tomorrow night, and I’m already being asked where I’m watching it. Not if I’m watching it, but where.

Such is the presumption amongst a large number of male gay friends that it’s an automatic yes, that I feel like I’m outing myself all over again.

“No … no I don’t like girls, or Eurovision.”

So then I’m asked “but why not?”

To which, well, first … stupid question, I don’t like it because I don’t like it – I’m not obligated to like Liza, Barbra, Kylie and Eurovision, just because I like guys! (Actually, I’m 2 out of 2 on that list; I leave it to your imagination!) I can see the appeal of the high camp, and perhaps at one time there was a degree of fun about it. Smaller, less professional; like watching a bad panto in a church hall put on by a local AmDram group. It wasn’t GOOD per se, but you could get into the spirit of the thing. (A pissed-as-a-fart Wogan didn’t hurt things!)

Now … well it’s just all so very SERIOUS. There are something approaching 3,147 countries taking part (or so it feels) … they are all so earnest, committed (or should be) and … well, it’s just so silly. But not in a good way.

Like X-factor, writ large, but without the reasonable incentive of a million pound deal at the end of it!

We funnel a fortune into the thing, year after year, knowing full well that it’s good money after bloody atrocious money. (In these times of austerity we ought to know better!)

So no, tomorrow, I won’t be watching Eurovision. I will top up my gay points by obsessing about Doctor Who and screaming at anyone has a telephone turned on within a 1 KM radius, then get drunk, instead.

Oh, and Blue’s “song” is just utterly awful too!

One Response to “Eurovision …”

  1. Thankfully, I managed to avoid the entire thing (not a fan). Well, I say I that – my Facebook and Twitter streams were awash with it… so I ignored the entire human race for the evening…
