Lesbian Art Group Receives Funding for Creative Workshops
I attended a Dyke Modern Art Event during the Pride Festival Week last year and was pleasantly surprised at how much fun I had. Having not picked up a pencil in a long time and creativity being something that doesn’t come naturally, I was nervous about whether I would produce something that could be constituted as art or more mistaken for a child’s scribble and embarrass myself. What I discovered was a welcoming group of girls in an environment that was very relaxed and friendly. I was impressed with techniques they used to explore creativity that reignited the passion for drawing that I had during my teens. It certainly had me reaching for the dusty box of paints on top of my wardrobe, over the following days.
So I am thrilled to hear that Dyke Modern has been awarded a grant from Brighton & Hove City Council to present four creative low-cost workshops in April, May and June.

Based in Brighton & Hove, Dyke Modern promotes creative activities that encourage lesbians to be inspired and empowered. The group co-ordinates events, workshops and exhibitions involving all forms of art and warmly welcomes lesbians of all backgrounds, abilities and ages.
Designed around the theme of inner and outer landscapes, the four new workshops, held in Brighton and Hove on Saturday afternoons, involve shrine-making with Tara Dikini, creative travel writing with Sheila McWattie, writing inspired by experiences of the 1940s land girls with Cathy Ives, and musical improvisation with Al Start.
Workshop co-ordinator Rebecca Jenkins says: “Dyke Modern has been running for 11 years and co-ordinates a wide range of events, such as workshops and exhibitions for Brighton Festival and Pride. We’re inviting as many women as possible to find out about Dyke Modern and our four Spring workshops. We hold informal meetings and offer plenty of opportunities to join other creative women in our vibrant social network. No artistic experience is necessary for any of these workshops – just come along and enjoy an afternoon of creative energy. We are grateful to Brighton & Hove City Council for their support.”
Full details of the workshops can be found on the Zhoosh Events Guide.
